How long do perms last?

A perm, therefore, provides long-lasting curls, hence the name "perm". When you have a perm done by a good hairdresser, it can last for 4 to 6 months. How long your perm lasts also depends on the length and condition of your hair. Additionally, it's worth noting: the tighter the curl, the longer the perm will last.

If you have no experience with these hair treatments, it is highly recommended to have these treatments performed by a professional hairdresser. Performing them at home can carry risks, including damaged hair and undesirable results, if not executed correctly.

How to Get Permanent Curls?

Whether you have straight or curly hair is determined by chemical compounds in your hair: hydrogen compounds, sodium compounds, and sulfur compounds. You can temporarily change your hair shape with a straightener or curling iron because sodium and hydrogen compounds easily break down with heat. Sulfur compounds are a bit stronger and can be loosened through a perm treatment.

During a perm application, your hair strands are twisted into rollers. The number of wraps you need depends on the desired look and the thickness of your hair. An average perm typically requires between 20 and 40 wraps. The thickness of the rollers determines how big your curls will be. For fine hair, smaller rollers are ideal, such as spiral rollers. These create small, bouncy curls that are suitable for fine hair. For coarse curls, you can use larger rollers, such as jumbo rollers or traditional papillotes. These create larger waves and curls.

Next, perm solution is applied to the hair. The processing time varies depending on hair type and the type of perm solution you use. This is usually stated in the product instructions but is typically between 10 and 20 minutes. Perm solution contains ammonium thioglycolate. This substance causes your hair cuticles to open, allowing the perm solution to penetrate deeply into the hair and break the sulfur compounds. After applying the perm solution, you must leave the hair under a heat cap, usually for 15-30 minutes.

Afterward, the hair is rinsed with water while the rollers remain in the hair. The next step is applying neutralizing solution with hydrogen peroxide. The hydrogen peroxide forms new sulfur compounds, which ensure that your hair remains curled.

Is a Perm Good for Your Hair?

Unfortunately, there are also disadvantages to permanent curls. After a perm treatment, the original sulfur compounds are not fully restored. Your hair is vulnerable and less healthy, leading to quicker breakage and split ends. Additionally, the hair cuticles are damaged by the perm solution, causing your hair to become porous.

Although you can perm fine hair, it's important to use a milder perm solution and carefully read the instructions to minimize damage. Fine hair is more delicate and prone to damage.

What Not to Do After a Perm?

After the perm treatment, wait at least 48 hours before washing your hair again. This gives the curls time to set and last longer. Additionally, use a mild, sulfate-free shampoo specifically designed for curly or chemically treated hair. Sulfate-free shampoos are gentler and help preserve the natural oils in your hair, making your curls look healthy and resilient.

How Much Does a Coarse Perm Cost?

The cost of a perm at the salon can vary depending on various factors, such as the length and thickness of your hair and the desired style. Generally, you can expect the cost of a perm at a salon to range between 150 and 200 euros.
