It is important to apply an SPF (Sun Protection Factor) every day and repeat this during the day. You can choose for a mineral sunscreen, a chemical sunscreen or a combination of both. We tell you the difference.
“What is the difference between a chemical sunscreen and a mineral sunscreen?”: a sunscreen with chemical filters absorbs into the skin and stops the UV-radiation. Mineral filters put a layer onto the skin which reflects the light. Sometimes, sunscreens contains chemical filters as well as mineral filters.
What is a mineral sunscreen?
A sunscreen with mineral sun filters form a protective layer on the skin surface. In this way UV-radiation is stopped; it reflects like a mirror. The UV-radiation cannot intrude in this way. A sunscreen with mineral filters is very good with an (allergic)sensitive skin. These sunscreens work directly after applying. A mineral sunscreen often has a thick texture and can leave a white haze on the skin. You can recognize mineral sun filters on the packaging as for example titanium oxide or zinc oxide.
What is a chemical sunscreen?
A sunscreen with chemical filters absorbs into the skin and protects the skin in this way against damaging influences of UV-radiation by absorbing it. A chemical sunscreen only works from 30 minutes after applying it on the skin. Chemical sunscreens have a pleasant, light texture and are easy to apply. A great advantage of sunscreens with chemical filters is that they are transparent on the skin. There is much choice regarding textures of chemical sunscreens, such as milk and oil. Chemical sunscreens are unfortunately less suitable for an atopic, sensitive or allergic skin. Chemical filters can be recognised on the packaging as: avobenzone, octocrylene, oxybenzone and octyl methoxycinnamate.
