What are the best curly girl products?

The Curly Girl Method is a hair care method for natural curls. When you follow this method, you avoid products containing sulphates, silicones, waxes, drying alcohol and mineral oils. These ingredients put a sealing layer around your hair, which can dry out natural curls. In addition, the ingredients are not easy to remove from hair. What does curly girl mean?

Curly Girl is a method for caring for natural curly hair. The CG method was developed by hairstylist Lorraine Massey and ensures that your own curls become more beautifully shaped and shinier. The key to the Curly Girl method is to avoid certain ingredients and styling methods in your hair care routine.

What do you need for the curly girl method?

Starting the CG method can be quite challenging. These basic principles tell you what you need:

  • Shampoo without silicones, mineral oils, sulfates, parabens, and drying alcohols.

This ensures that your hair dries out, gets damaged, and frizzes as little as possible. Some wash their curls only with conditioner. This is also called co-washing.

  • Good curl care

Some hair care products can form a layer around your hair, making it heavier and causing your curls to lose their natural shape. This care comes in various textures such as leave-in conditioner, cream, gel, mousse... Experiment and discover which products suit you best.

  • Avoid heat tools

In addition to some ingredients, heat also dries out your hair. Therefore, it's best not to use styling tools with heat. If you still use them to style your hair, opt for a hairdryer with a diffuser and good heat regulation. Also, always use a heat protectant product.

  • Do not brush or comb

In the CG method, it is advised to only comb your hair when you have conditioner in it. Brushing and combing disrupt the natural curl pattern and make your hair frizzier more quickly.

  • Microfiber towel

Do not use a regular towel to dry your hair. The terrycloth is too rough, causing curly hair to frizz more quickly. An old cotton T-shirt or microfiber towel is CG-proof.

How do you start the curly girl method?

Step 1: Final wash

Wash your hair for the last time with a shampoo that contains sulfates, but without silicones, mineral oils, wax, and drying alcohols. Do this to wash the "bad" ingredients out of your hair. This way, you can start with a clean slate. After the final wash, use a hair mask (CG-friendly!) so that the hair doesn't dry out from the sulfates.

Step 2: Determine your hair type

Determining your hair type is one of the most important steps in the process. The CG method distinguishes between three different hair types:

  • Wavy: Also known as wavy hair or wave.
  • Curly: Also known as curly hair and has a clear spiral shape. They can be loose or tight curls. These curls sometimes sit nicely in place but can also frizz quickly.
  • Coily: Also known as kinky hair and is very dry in texture. The texture of this hair can be soft and fine or thick and rough.

Step 3: Wash your hair

Wash your hair with CG-friendly products. Wash only the scalp with shampoo. Massage your scalp in circular motions to loosen the dirt. Then, use a conditioner or hair mask.

Step 4: Comb

You can comb your curls best when they are soaked with conditioner and water. This makes your hair smoother and less likely to be damaged when combing. In the CG method, it is not recommended to comb the hair with a brush, as this breaks the hair more easily and disrupts the natural curl pattern. Comb your hair with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb.

Step 5: Styling

Depending on your hair type, you can start with a leave-in conditioner spray. For a wavy hair type, this can also be skipped as it can weigh down the hair. Then you can start applying styling products, preferably when the hair is still wet. You can use a hair gel or mousse to set the curls, a cream to define your curls.

If you want to dry your hair with a hairdryer. Use a diffuser and dry on a low temperature. Once your hair is dry, your curls may feel hard. You can solve this by scrunching your hair again with your hands and using some oil.
