What are Silicones?

Silicones put a layer around your hair, you could see this as some type of plastic or rubber layer which protects the hair and repels water. Because of this layer, your hair becomes more shiny, smoother, softer, less static, looks healthier and it is easier to comb through.

Different types of silicones exist, there are evaporating silicones, silicones which are solvable in water and silicones which are not. As the name already suggest, water solvable silicones could be removed from the hair with water. Evaporating silicones, evaporate after you have used the product. These are used to increase the spreadability of products. These silicones are the least ‘damaging’. Silicones which are not solvable in water, could only be removed from the hair with sulphates. When you do use these silicones, but no sulphates, you could develop a ‘build-up’ of layers of silicones. Because of this your hair could become dull and heavy and it could be a cause of your scalp problems.

Therefore it is wise to look at the combination of silicones and sulphates in your hair routine. To prevent ‘build-up’ it is smart to use a shampoo with sulphates, when you use products with non-water solvable silicones. If you react badly on sulphates, you could better use products with water solvable silicones or hair products without silicones.
